Infinity and Eternity

One day I and God were talking.

I: Does the universe have a boundary?

God: Sure. It does.

I: Really?? Everybody keeps saying that the universe is infinite and eternal.

God: (laughs) Do you really understand the words infinite and eternal?

I: Of course, infinite space is a space so big that it is not finite; similarly, eternal time.

God: It is funny. Everybody says those words; but I don’t think anybody even tries to understand them. What do you picture in mind when you think of infinite and eternal?

I: That’s easy. However far I go I will always find more space. That is infinite space.

God: OK. I will take you to the edge of the universe. Can you show me more space there?

I: Come on, that’s a contradiction. If you take me to the edge of the universe, there won’t be more space. Only if space is infinite can I show more of it, wherever you take me.

God: I can assure you. Space is infinite. But the universe has an edge. Want to see it?

I: Of course, I want to.

God: OK. Then, hop on.

I was sitting on God’s shoulders. We went above the earth, passed the moon, the planets, our galaxy, and more. Finally, we reached a point where all galaxies seemed to be behind us and none ahead. God went along till the last star faded out of our view. It was dark.

God: OK. We reached the edge of the universe.

I: I cannot see anything here.

God: OK. Take this torch light.

I took the torch light and pointed the light around me.

I: There is nothing to see here. It looks like a black wall all around. Are we still moving?

God: I don’t know. What do you think?

I: How can we know whether we are moving or not? If there was some thing else here, which we know is stationary we can answer that question. I am confused.

God: But there is nothing* here. So that question cannot be answered. Anyway, where do you think is our earth?

I: Behind us, of course.

God just twirled around randomly in all directions (up-down, right-left, front-back)

I: Are you crazy? What are you doing? Now how do we know where we should go?

God: I will take care of that. You tell me, are we upside down? Where is earth? How far?

I: You made me lose direction and orientation. I don’t know the distance. I can’t know.

God: This is infinity, Mate. Here direction is undefined, length/area/volume is undefined, and motion is undefined; space is undefined. Can you tell me how long we are here?

I: No. (I was shocked)

God: We cannot know as there is no way to measure time here. Here, time is undefined. By earth’s measure, maybe a million years passed or an hour. We cannot know.

I: This is so creepy and scary. Take me back to earth.

God: (laughs sadly) When I was first here, I can’t even tell when it was. Time was not defined. I don’t know where. Space was not defined. I couldn’t even tell whether I was different from all this darkness around me. I still haven’t met something other than me.

I: It must have been very scary.

God: (laughs) No, Mate. I created that feeling for you guys. What I felt cannot be defined. I was infinite and eternal. You guys use those words as if to say infinite is so big and eternal is a long time. This is the truth. Infinite space is not huge space; it is space where direction, distances, orientation are undefined. Similarly, eternal means time is undefined.

I: Thanks for the demo. One last question; where will I go after my death?

God: You came from eternity. You will go back to eternity.

I: Now that doesn’t make too much sense.

God: Think about it.

And then, we flew back to earth. Maybe, God will explain it some other time.

*I used the word “nothing” here as I and God were there. If we were not there, There was neither nothing nor something. Nothing is defined only in presence of something.

A few years back I was discussing with a friend, Vamsee, about where will we go after our deaths. He said, “____ answered that question. We came from eternity. We will go back to eternity”. ____ is a guy who was supposed to have read the Vedas and was supposed to be very intelligent. This is not first hand info (though I met ____). ____ was Vamsee’s friend and I trust, at least, that Vamsee was not lying. Whether he has been lied to is a different question. However, I like the answer that supposedly came from ____.
